About

A directory for people who shop with intention

Corner Atlas maps Australia's independent retail shops โ€” the bookshops, record stores, homewares shops, stationers, jewellers and toy shops worth going out of your way for.

Why this exists

Australia has thousands of extraordinary independent shops. Bookshops with reading lists that change your life. Record stores where the owner will dig out exactly the thing you didn't know you needed. Homewares shops where every object has been chosen with care.

Most of these places are invisible online. A Google search returns chains, marketplaces, and directories that treat a one-person jewellery studio the same as a shopping centre anchor tenant. There was no single place to find the independent shops that give a suburb its character.

Corner Atlas exists to fix that. It is an independent, editorially curated directory of Australian retail shops โ€” built for people who believe that where you spend your money matters.

What we cover

The atlas covers six categories of independent retail across every state and territory. Every listing includes the shop's story, opening hours, location, and what it's known for.

Editorial approach

The directory is editorially curated. Inclusion is based on a simple standard: is this a genuinely independent shop with a real shopfront and a reason to visit? Chains, franchises, and pop-ups are not listed.

Listings are not paid placements. Every shop appears on its own merits. Shop owners can claim their listing and enhance it with additional detail, but payment never influences inclusion or ranking.

Independence criteria

To be listed on Corner Atlas, a shop must be independently owned and operated. That means: not a franchise, not a chain with more than three locations, and not a concession inside a department store. Co-operatives and social enterprises qualify. Online-only retailers do not โ€” you need a physical shopfront.

For shops

If your shop is listed, you can claim it and take control of your listing โ€” update your description, add photos, set your opening hours, and make sure customers have accurate information before they visit.

Listings are $99 per year. This includes a full profile with photos, opening hours, your story, and a link to your website and online shop.
