Boat Shed Wine Loft

Cottesloe, WA
The Story

The shed on Jarrad Street built Australia II, the 12-metre yacht that ended the New York Yacht Club's 132-year hold on the America's Cup in 1983; boatbuilder Steve Ward had leased the site since 1950 before the vessel took shape there under designer Ben Lexcen. The Boatshed was converted into a fresh food market in December 1988, and in March 2017 four retrofitted shipping containers were suspended from the original boat-building gantries to create the Wine Loft above the market floor. The list runs toward small, family-run producers over big labels, with bottles available to drink on site for a corkage fee alongside a teppanyaki counter sharing the same loft. Below, the market keeps trading in bread, cheese, seafood and produce, giving the wine room a working-market backdrop rather than a standalone cellar-door hush. Open seven days, 10am to 8pm. A layered stop for a Cottesloe visit — market browsing, a maritime history footnote, and a considered glass of wine in one building.
