Matt Farrah opened his first liquor shop, Campbell Liquor Discounts, in Canberra in 1992, and has spent the three decades since across retail, wholesale, vineyard management and winemaking, including developing a vineyard in New Zealand's Marlborough region. Every label is said to pass an internal quality panel before it reaches the floor, and the same network supplies wine lists at restaurants across Canberra. It reads as a working warehouse rather than a boutique bottle shop, stacked with pallets more than polished display, but that is the point: a producer-first operation in an industrial pocket of the capital, giving small winemakers shelf space they would rarely get through the majors. Open seven days, with Saturday trade starting an hour earlier than the rest of the week.

Inside the Fyshwick Markets, among the fruit stalls and delis, this family-owned bottle shop has been trading since 2006 on a straightforward premise: back Australian brewers and winemakers ahead of the imported labels that dominate bigger retailers. The range runs heavy on craft beer, with wine, cider and spirits filling out the shelves, and staff who know the local Canberra district producers by name. It trades on the market's own schedule — Thursday to Sunday only — which suits the rhythm of a weekend market run rather than an everyday errand. A Belconnen sister store has since closed, leaving Fyshwick as the sole outpost, but the market setting still gives it a genuine local following that a standalone shopfront might not.
