Thornlands

An orchid nursery on Boundary Road at Thornlands, in Redland City south-east of Brisbane. The shelves are given over to orchids and everything that keeps them going — potting mixes, fertilisers, growing aids, pot hangers and accessories — with staff who know the genus. It's a working nursery you can walk into seven days a week, mornings through the afternoon, with mail order for growers further afield.

The focus is succulents — sold singly or in made-up combinations — alongside a rotating cast of seasonal plants and the decorative pots to put them in. It's a modest, personal operation, open Tuesday to Sunday through the middle of the day, with Mondays by appointment.
